BAT not affected by higher tobacco imports

BAT said it remained concerned with legal volumes continuing to be impacted by the current high incidence of illegal cigarette trade. The outlook for the second half of 2018, BAT said, would be very much dependant on the recovery of the legal market.

PETALING JAYA: The higher tobacco imports is not expected to have much impact on British American Tobacco (M) Bhd’s (BAT) bottom line, said CGS-CIMB.

This is because the import value of tobacco products in the first quarter of the year at RM210.3mil was still lower than 2017 first-quarter imports of RM245.3mil, during which BAT’s cigarettes were manufactured at the old factory in Petaling Jaya.
