Perodua targets 4% sales growth in 2019

KUALA LUMPUR: Perodua is targeting a sales performance of 231,000 units in 2019, 4% over its record performance of 227,243 units last year.

Perodua President and CEO Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad announced the target despite the Malaysian Automotive Association's (MAA) forecast for incremental 0.21% total industry volume growth to 600,000 units in 2019 compared to 598,714 units previously.

The MAA explained that the growth in 2018 was due to the one-off June-August tax holiday, and barring any fresh incentives, the market should remain at the same level in 2019.

"For Perodua, the Myvi is expected to remain popular this year, and since we started order-taking for the Aruz on Jan 3, we have collected nearly 5,700 bookings to date.

"Given that our sales target is 2,500 units monthly, the figure is very encouraging indeed,” said Zainal.

In 2018, the MyVi was Perodua's best-selling model with 82,122 registered out of 117,844 booked that year.

Meanwhile, the Axia, Bezza and Alza remain the best-selling models in their segments with 70,821, 49,911 and 24,389 units sold respectively in 2018.

Perodua expects component purchases in 2019 to increase 20% to RM6bil, in line with the expected demand.

It also expects vehicle manufacturing to increase 10.5% to 242,000 units in 2019, compared with 219,000 total vehicles rolling out of the Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd plants in 2018.

Service intakes and sales of parts and accessories reached record levels in 2018 while the body and paint and pre-owned vehicle businesses also saw encouraging growth.
