Global steel demand to grow 1.4 percent in 2019

UOB Kay Hian Malaysia Research sees a brighter outlook for the cement and steel products in the second half of 2019, underpinned by higher average selling prices (ASPs) folowing the consolidation in the industry and more construction activities.

TOKYO: Growth in global steel demand is expected to slow to 1.4 percent next year to reach 1.681 billion tonnes, the World Steel Association (worldsteel) said on Tuesday.

In 2018, global steel demand is on course to grow 3.9 percent to 1.658 billion tonnes, driven by top consumer China, it added.

Steel use in China is expected to rise 6.0 percent this year to 781 million tonnes and remain flat in 2019, worldsteel said. - Reuters
