KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Ismail Bakar has been appointed the Secretary-General of the Treasury, Ministry of Finance (MoF) effective today.

In a statement, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said he believed Ismail would be effective in the role as he has vast experience pertaining to the economy and finance.

StarBiz had earlier reported that Ismail was set to fill the post left vacant from the removal of Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah following the government's efforts to clean up the country's finances.

Ismail, 58, was the budget director at the MoF before he was moved in November 2014 to head the civil service at the Transport Ministry.

Barely a year later, he was again transferred to the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry where he was the secretary-general prior to his return to the MoF.
