Telekom Q3 earnings up by one-third to nearly RM212m

Foreign exchange gain on the group

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd's earnings rose 32.5% to RM211.81mil in the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2017 from RM159.84mil a year ago, aided by foreign exchange gain on the group’s borrowings.

It said on Wednesday its revenue increased by 0.6% to RM2.94bil from RM2.92bil a year ago due to higher revenue from Internet and multimedia services. Earnings per share were 5.64 sen compared with 4.25 sen.

Internet and multimedia services registered higher revenue from RM918.8mil a year ago to RM1bil  mainly due to increase in unifi customer base with more than 1,061,000 at the end of the current quarter compared to 921,144 a year ago.

Unifi's revenue increased by 4.0% (RM51.3mil) to RM1.337bil mainly due to higher cumulative unifi customers of 1,042,383 as compared to 904,237 as at the end of corresponding quarter last year. Higher operating costs led to decrease in profit of 50.8% (RM42.4mil) to RM41.1mil.

TM ONE recorded a 5.5% (RM64.7mi) decrease in revenue from RM1.178bil to RM1.115bil due to lower revenue from other telecommunication, data and voice services despite higher Internet and multimedia revenue.

This caused profits to fall by 21.5% (RM50.8mil) to RM185.6mil in the current quarter from RM236.4mil a year ago.

As for TM Global, revenue dipped by 2.1% (RM11.8mil) from RM560.2mil to RM548.4mil mainly contributed by lower data revenue. Profit however increased by 32.6% (RM23.3mil) from RM71.4mil a year ago to RM94.7mil due to lower operating cost.

For the nine months ended Sept 30, its earnings increased by 5% to RM652.73mil from RM621.72mil in the previous corresponding period. Revenue was higher at RM8.88bil from RM8.82bil.
