KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s motor vehicle sector is on track to contribute 10% to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020, said Malaysia Automotive Institute’s (MAI) chief executive officer, Datuk Madani Sahari.
He said the sector had contributed 3.6% to the GDP last year value at RM40bil.
“The industry has 700,000 people. Malaysia’s motor vehicle industry has been recognised by the Government as the important contributor to the economy with its expected contribution of 10% to our GDP in 2020,” he said at a press conference on Malaysia Car of the Year (COTY) Awards Night 2017 (COTY 2017) and updates on Malaysia Autoshow 2017 in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
The Malaysia COTY 2017 was held in the run-up to the Malaysia Autoshow 2017. All winning vehicles and more models will be on displayed at the Malaysia Autoshow 2017 which will be held on Nov 9-12, 2017 in Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang.
Madani said the Malaysia Autoshow 2017, officially organised by MAI, was set to be the most-anticipated car event in Malaysia.
“It will feature numerous outdoor activities and the largest internal spaces of car show in three halls,” he said.
He said Malaysia’s motor vehicle sales as of October 2017 were up 1.7% compared to January-October last year, and the full-year’s performance would now depend on the performances of November and December.
“We are hoping the Autoshow 2017 can boost more sales. The target of 590,000 units (for 2017) can be achieved. We are hoping to do more than that,” he said. - Bernama
