KUALA LUMPUR: DRB-Hicom Bhd trimmed its loss attributable to shareholders by more than half for the financial year ended March 31, 2017 (FY17).

In its latest interim financial report to Bursa Malaysia, the conglomerate said its loss for the year was slashed by 54% to RM454.4mil.

Contributing to the lower loss were as a RM398.11mil gain on disposal of a 90% stake in The Verge commercial development in Singapore last November, RM468.4mil lower net loss incurred by Proton (based on a May 24 announcement to the exchange) and larger profit contribution from the services segment (after Pos Malaysia became a subsidiary in September last year).

Offsetting these was a loss on remeasurement of RM130.22mil resulting from DRB-Hicom’s previously-held 32.21% equity interest in Pos Malaysia at its acquisition-date fair value of RM3.26 per share.

Much of the bottom line progress took place in the final quarter of FY17, when it slashed its loss by 58% year-on-year to RM328.45mil. That was an improvement of RM462.31mil.

(While DRB-Hicom returned to the black in the third quarter after three consecutive quarters of losses, Q3’s stronger performance was mainly due to the RM398.11mil extraordinary gain from The Verge disposal.)

During the fourth quarter ended March 31, DRB-Hicom’s revenue jumped 32% to RM3.48bil compared to the previous year’s corresponding period.

The company said this was the result of higher sales revenue achieved by all business sectors of the group, including recognition of revenue of Pos Malaysia as a subsidiary.

(DRB-Hicom’s stake in Pos Malaysia climbed from 32.21% to 53.5% after DRB-Hicom injected two logistics-related assets into Pos Malaysia last year for RM749.35mil via the issuance of new Pos Malaysia shares.)

The services sector recorded a 41% increase to RM3.55bil in revenue against RM2.51bil in the previous cycle.

The property sector boosted its revenue by 45% to RM427.31m in the year, mainly through The Verge’s stake disposal.

The automotive sector saw revenue slip by 14% to RM8.08bil largely due to lower sales, as the industry recorded a contraction in calendar year 2016.

DRB-Hicom recently brought in Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd as a foreign strategic partner for its subsidiary Proton Holdings Bhd, A definitive agreement between both parties is expected to be signed in the third quarter of 2017.
