Increasing density around MRT stations

Tong on the MRT system: ‘In order to realise its full potential to reduce traffic congestion and improve overall efficiency, we must first attract more people to use the MRT facility.’

OUR mass rapid transit (MRT) line commenced its first phase of operation last December. I had an opportunity to experience riding on it recently. The infrastructure looks good and the whole journey was pleasant. However, the low ridership during peak hours got me wondering.

I took a ride from the Phileo Damansara to Sungai Buloh stations right after work. It took me about half an hour and cost RM4. The train with a capacity for 1,200 passengers looked spacious as only about 10% of the seats were occupied.
