KUALA LUMPUR: Composites Technology Research Malaysia Sdn Bhd (CTRM) is investing RM93.4mil to boost the production capacity for parts used to manufacture Airbus’ A320 single-aisle and A350 aircraft.
The aircraft composites component maker, an indirect subsidiary of DRB-Hicom Bhd, said in a statement that it had begun works on a new building - dubbed the ‘B6’ - at its manufacturing facility in Malacca.
The two-storey building, to be sited on a 7-acre plot and comprise 130,000 sq ft of manufacturing area, is part of its plan to meet future volume demand of parts it produced for the popular A320 and A350 aircraft.
Located next to the B5 building, the new structure will house offices as well other facilities for the staff on the upper floor.
Construction began in January with soil investigation work, and is expected to be completed by April 2018.
CTRM said it would invest a total of RM93.4mil for this expansion project, with RM39.5mil going towards the building and RM53.9mil channeled towards the capital expnditure.
This includes major equipment including two additional autoclave machines, one unit non destructive testing machine, three units of computer numerical control (CNC) machines and one spray paint facility.
When operations start in 2018, the B6 will enable CTRM to meet increased demand for the A320 and A350 components.
CTRM said it would be able to raise A320 component output by 26% to 63 aircraft sets per month
For the A350, component production can be increased by more than 60% to 13 sets monthly on the transfer of the operations to the B6.
CTRM plans to produce the wing trailing and leading edge components of the A320/321, and the J-nose for the A350 at the new facility.
CTRM is a single source supplier and the largest composites component supplier for the Airbus A320 single aisle commercial aircraft work package.
Close to 6,000 Airbus A320 aircraft flying around the globe have their wing components made by CTRM.
Furthermore, CTRM is also the single source supplier for the manufacture and supply of Airbus A350 fan cowl.
