KUALA LUMPUR: Heitech Padu Bhd has been awarded a RM48.23mil contract to integrate Fomema’s Foreign Worker Medical Examination System (FWMES) with the Malaysian Immigration System (myIMMs) used for biometric verification of foreign workers.

The IT systems integrator, which maintains the myIMMs online immigration database system, told Bursa Malaysia that the letter of award from Fomema would be deemed to have begun from the date of the official signing of the new concession agreement between Fomema and the Government.

“In the event that no such award be issued by Government to Fomema within six months from the date of acceptance of this letter of award, the letter of award shall automatically lapse,” the company said.

In September last year, HeiTech Padu clinched a three-year, RM38.35mil contract to maintain the equipment and software computer system for the Immigration Department; and in April this year it was awarded an 18-month extension of the contract and additional ceiling for application system maintenahce services at the department worth RM21.47mil.

In January, Fomema (Pantai Fomema & Systems Sdn Bhd), which was given a government concession in 1997 to monitor and supervise the medical examination of foreign workers in Malaysia, said three out of 100 foreign workers who underwent health screening suffered from dangerous diseases such as TB, Hepatitis B and AIDS.

In June, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the Government was mulling annual compulsory medical check-ups for foreign workers.\

The Malaysian Employers Federation, meanwhile, said it supported an annual check-up in principle but the health screening of foreign workers should not be monopolised by Fomema.

The Immigration Department started implementing biometric medical tests in early 2014. The Foreign Workers Centralised Management System’s biometric health checks operated by Bestinet Sdn Bhd were put on hold in January last year after protests of drastic hikes in fees.
