StanChart cardholders in M'sia to get 20% cashback on global Uber rides

Reasonable approach: Sao Paolo may opt to regulate Uber instead of banning it outright.

KUALA LUMPUR: Standard Chartered Bank credit cardholders in Malaysia will now receive 20% cashback on all Uber rides globally under a recent partnership entered between the bank and the international ride-sharing service provider.

The amount of cashback would be subject to a cashback cap of RM60 and a minimum of RM750 in eligible retail spends per calendar month. Cardholders who are first-time Uber users would  enjoy RM10 off every ride for the first three rides.

The collaboration is offered to card holders in six markets - Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, India and the United Arab Emirates - across two continents up to 25% cashback for all global Uber rides.

This is the first multi-market partnership for both Standard Chartered Bank and Uber, the world’s most popular transport app. Collaborating with Uber is part of Standard Chartered’s digital agenda to deliver simple and convenient banking through digital channels for increasingly tech-savvy clients.

Ride hailing service providers such as Uber are fast becoming a mainstream feature of transportation globally, and continue to gain popularity. This collaboration between Standard Chartered and Uber capitalises on key areas of synergies, namely an extensive geographical network, highly-mobile client base and the desire to provide innovative offerings to clients.

Standard Chartered Bank regional head, retail banking, for Asean and South Asia Sebastian Arcuri said: “There has been a dramatic shift towards digital and cashless payments across the region and we are seeing success in the seamless integration of the bank’s services in our clients’ everyday life.

“As a global bank with a focus on Asia, Africa and the Middle East, we are pleased to partner Uber, a transport network operating in more than 425 cities, to engage our clients for both their local and overseas transport needs.”

Commenting on the move, the bank’s country head for retail banking in Malaysia Aaron Loo noted: “This partnership with Uber is one of many cross-border benefits for our cardholders, to cater to their highly mobile and global lifestyles.

"We strive to make banking easy and convenient by being ‘digital by design’: in July, we became the first bank in the country to offer video banking to both personal and priority clients and in February, we introduced the Retail Workbench that allows our service and sales teams to engage and transact with our clients outside the branch network. Our digital by design approach follows 141 years of innovation that we have brought to Malaysia.”
