KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Smelting Corp Bhd (MSC), one of the world’s largest tin mining and smelting groups, has appointed Patrick Yong Mian Thong as chief executive officer.

Yong, 63, is managing director of MSC’s unit M Smelt (C) Sdn Bhd, a RM2 company that MSC bought from Yong and his partner in June which, a day after, acquired Metal Reclamation (Industries) Sdn Bhd’s industrial land in Port Klang as well as its plant and machinery. The RM50mil land and asset purchase was meant to cater to MSC’s long-term business plans.

In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Friday, the company said Yong, whose career path appears to have been mainly in the electrical and electronic sector, would replace Chua Cheong Yong effective Oct 7.

Chua, 58, has resigned to pursue his personal interests. A veteran at MSC with more than 30 years of service, he had been CEO since January 2014 after about two years as deputy group CEO.

In a press statement, MSC said Yong had more than four decades of experience in global business operations in several business areas including leadership, research and development of international marketing and sales organisation.

He started out as an engineer with the National Electricity Board of Malaysia (LLN). He left in 1989 to pursue his career in the field of consultancy in electrical engineering.

He founded Sulfarid Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd in 2004, where he was its managing director. The company, which is believed to be involved in developing and marketing electronic and electrical equipment, was subsequently acquired by the Hup Soon Global Corp Ltd in November 2007 and renamed Borid Technologies.

“Throughout his line of work, Dr Yong established his proficiency in electrical distribution systems and pursued research in the field of efficiency in energy conversion leading to a PhD in Electrical Engineering,” MSC said.

MSC chairman Chew Gek Khim said in the statement that Yong was a proven leader with strong engineering skills, business vision and extensive experience in global business operations.

“The board knows Patrick as a respected and knowledgeable leader with the ability to adapt quickly to market changes in close collaboration with the board, the management and his employees, which is what the group needs as it enters its next phase of expansion and growth,” she said.
