Peering through the bars – sort of

WHEN Shaik Osman Majid, my first boss in journalism suggested that I do a series of features on Malaysian prisons, I was nonplussed.

So I turned to the intrepid R Nadeswaran, then a senior journalist in the Malay Mail and, more famously, now Citizen Nades. The Citizen, who was built along the lines of a terrorist himself, knew everyone and all sorts of people including assorted criminals, prison wardens, even hangmen because, let’s face it, to the criminal mind “no noose” was good news.
