THE Greater Kuala Lumpur transformation journey towards becoming a world-class city has reached its midway point.

“We are still very much on course towards achieving our aspiration to transform Greater Kuala Lumpur into a truly world-class urban setting that citizens can be proud to call ‘home’ by 2020,” Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Utama Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said in the National Transformation Programme annual report 2015.

He said some of the biggest game changers for this city was the impending completion of the first phase of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in December 2016, the high speed rail connection between KL and Singapore and continuous efforts to transform the Klang and Gombak rivers into a glittering attraction for KL.

The Greater KL/Klang Valley national key economic areas initiatives are geared to ensure that identified entry point projects play an integral role in transforming Malaysia into a high income nation by 2020, with a targeted GNI impact of RM391.6bil and creation of 553,000 jobs.

KL is ranked 73rd among 140 cities in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2015 Global Liveability Ranking. The ranking is up five places from 2010. In the World Bank Group’s Ease of Doing Business Report, KL also moved up five spots from 2010 to 18th in 2015.

For 2015, the KPIs under the MRT construction are “on track”, within timeline and without cost overun.

At the Sungai Buloh Depot, 24 trains were delivered and tested in schedule, exceeding its original target of delivery merely 15 trains. The progress for the handing over of tunnels and station trackway to the system contractor was regularly reviewed. The first phase of the MRT Line 1 (Sungai Buloh-Semantan) is expected to be operational by year-end while the full line (Sungai Buloh - Kajang) is expected to be operational by July 2017.
