KLCI closes down for midday break in line with key Asian markets


KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session in a negative territory at mid-day in line with the insipid performance of its regional peers.

At 12.30 pm, there were 234 gainers, 406 losers and 1,109 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia. Turnover was at 801.188 million shares valued at RM694.5mil.

The benchmark FBM-KLCI was down 6.86 points to 1,710.72 weighted down by selected heavyweight stocks.

JF Apex Research said following the overnight muted performance in the US and Europe, the FBM KLCI was expected to be under selling pressure arising from the profit taking with its immediate support at 1700 points.

On the other hand, BIMB Securities reckoned the local market to remain “sideways today due to lack of fresh catalysts” with the index to hover around 1,715-20.

Leading the top gainers, Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd and Aeon Co. (M) Bhd added 10 sen each to RM20.80 and 2.83 respectively. CI Holdings Bhd accumulated nine sen to RM2.87.

Of top losers, Nestle (M) Bhd fell RM1.92 to RM74.98, Chin Teck Plantations Bhd reduced 50 sen RM7.50 while British American Tobacco (M) lost 30 sen to RM53.62.

Among heavyweights, CIMB was down eight sen at RM4.77, Sime Darby was 2 sen better at RM7.93 and Tenaga Nasional perked 2 sen to RM13.96.

Spot gold was down US$1.75 to US$1,231 per ounce.

The ringgit was quoted at 3.9093 against the greenback while West Texas Intermediate oil has fallen to US$37.77 while Brent crude have tumbled to US$39.77 per barrel.

Among the key regional markets,

Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 3.47% to 16,177.39;

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index is down 1.22%to 20,522.37;

CSI 300 fell 1.48% to 3,170.36;

Taiwan’s Taiex fell 1.18% to 8,641.70;

South Korea’s Kospi eased 1.1% to 1,973.98 and

Singapore’s Straits Times Index declined 0.81% to 2,817.87.
