KUALA LUMPUR: Former CIMB Bank chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Sulaiman Mohd Tahir has been appointed as group CEO of AMMB Holdings Bhd and CEO of its commercial banking unit AmBank (M) Bhd effective next Monday, Nov 23.
The financial solutions group said in a statement that Sulaiman, 52, had a wealth of experience backed by 28 years of spearheading growth in retail operations.
“His experience in development and management of retail products and keen understanding of distribution channels to strategically grow the consumer banking business provides him with extensive insight into the sector,” it said.
AmBank Group chairman Tan Sri Azman Hashim said it was timely to bring Sulaiman on board.
“AmBank Group is a resilient and strong institution with a heritage that spans almost 40 years. It is time for fresh blood, particularly such capable homegrown talent, to help steer the group in strengthening our market share. The banking and finance ecosystem is changing at an exceptionally heightened pace and Datuk Sulaiman’s entry is certainly welcomed,” he said.
“We need to be more discerning of the needs of customers, be it in consumer banking, wholesale banking or investment banking. I am confident that Datuk Sulaiman will bring with him a new paradigm in terms of innovation, governance and the strengthening of our customer service levels.”
CIMB Group Holdings Bhd announced Sulaiman's resignation in August, with his official date leaving the bank being Nov 22.
In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, AMMB Holdings noted that Datuk Mohamed Azmi Mahmood, 61, had ceased to be acting group managing director but would remain as deputy group CEO.
AMMB shares shed 7 sen to close at RM4.59 on Friday.
