Icon Offshore appoints Petronas top exec Amir as new MD

PETALING JAYA: Icon Offshore Bhd , one of the largest offshore support vessel companies in the country, has roped in a top executive from Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) to helm the company.

The company said in a statement that it had appointed Amir Hamzah Azizan to take over the post as managing director effective March 1, 2016. This is following current chief executive officer Dr Jamal Yusof’s decision not to renew his contract.

Amir, 48, is currently the CEO of Petronas Lubricants International. He is also a vice-president at Petronas and a director at South Africa’s Engen Petroleum.

“The appointment of Amir comes after Icon’s board of directors and current CEO Jamal mutually agreed that he would not renew his contract, which is expiring on Nov 15, to pursue his own opportunities,” Icon said in a statement.

Icon added that its chief operations officer Rahman Yusof had also decided not to renew his contract and his role will be assumed by the current deputy CEO, Captain Hassan Ali.

Amir has 26 years of proven industry and international experience and extensive knowledge of the oil and gas industry, and the marine logistics sector.

He has in-depth experience in leading stock market-listed companies, with a strong track record of creating shareholder value through integrating operations and accelerating earnings growth by expanding into new markets and increasing market share.

“We welcome the appointment of Amir, who brings with him longstanding industry and international experience and a strong track record of value-creation through mergers and international expansion”,” chairman Raja Tan Sri Arshad Raja Tun Uda said in a statement.

As an interim measure, Icon will redesignate Datuk Abdul Rahman Ahmad, CEO of Ekuinas and current director of Icon, to the position of executive director at Icon effective until Feb 29, 2016. The redesignation will facilitate the handover and smooth transition between leadership teams.
