Retail spaces redefined

I HAVE read the recent closing down of the SStwo Mall in Petaling Jaya with interest. There are several theories circulating as to the cause of it ceasing operations just four years after its opening. However, one thing is certain. Notwithstanding its prime location, with an approximate 400,000 population in the vicinity, the expected traffic flow into the mall has not been consistently performing. Officially, the same building is now in for a redevelopment and a rebranding exercise.

The trend of retail development is now an urban norm since the introduction of mixed integrated development projects. Such projects are popular today as one can access retail shops and all types of facilities imaginable within the same development without the need to commute. Vertical township on concrete slabs with lifts and elevators are preferred to the horizontal hub expanding with arteries of roads and cars.
