BNM picks UKM vice chancellor, Yeah as MPC external members

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has appointed University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) vice chancellor Datuk Dr Noor Azlan and veteran economist Dr Yeah Kim Leng as external members of its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

The central bank said on Wednesday the two-year term would be from April 1, 2015. 

BNM said their appointments would further enhance the collective expertise and experience relevant to the MPC’s responsibilities and functions. MPC is responsible for formulating monetary policy and policies for the conduct of monetary policy operations.

It added their appointments followed from the enactment of the Central Bank of Malaysia Act 2009, which provides for the appointment of external members to the MPC.

Noor Azlan is professor of economics at UKM and started his career at the university over 20 years ago as a lecturer. He specialises in business and financial economics. 

He was seconded to the Prime Minister’s Department (2006-2009), serving as amongst others, the head of the special consultancy team on globalisation for the National Economic Action Council (NEAC) and the Director of the Malaysian Development Institute (MDI) at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU). 

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the US and a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard University.

BNM said Yeah is the dean of the School of Business at the Malaysia University of Science and Technology. 

He was previously the group chief economist at RAM Holdings Bhd, having served the organisation from 1994 to 2014. 

Prior to joining RAM Holdings, Yeah was a senior analyst at the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia. 

Yeah holds a PhD in Agriculture and Resource Economics and an MBA from the University of Hawaii.

With their appointments, the MPC committee will have 10 members:

(1) Governor Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Chairman

(2) Deputy Governor Datuk Muhammad bin Ibrahim

(3) Deputy Governor Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus

(4) Deputy Governor Dr. Sukudhew Singh

(5) Assistant Governor Bakarudin Ishak

(6) Assistant Governor Norzila Abdul Aziz

(7) Assistant Governor Abu Hassan Alshari Yahaya

(8) Assistant Governor Marzunisham Omar

(9) Datuk Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali

(10) Dr Yeah Kim Leng
