Tepco may hive off hydro and renewable energy ops

FILE - In this Nov. 18, 2013 file photo released by Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), workers try to remove radioactive fuel rods from the Unit 4 building at the crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan. Stigma, pay cuts, and risk of radiation exposure are among the reasons why nearly 3,000 employees have left the utility at the center of Japanâ¿TMs 2011 nuclear disaster. Now thereâ¿TMs an additional factor: better paying jobs in the solar energy industry. (AP Photo/Tokyo Electric Power Co., File)

TOKYO: Tokyo Electric Power Co may hive off its hydro-power and renewable energy operations into a separate unit, according to sources with knowledge of the matter, in another element to a revamp as it tries to recover from the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011.

Tepco, as the utility is called, has drafted successive recovery plans to restore its finances after the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986, which led to its takeover by the government.
