Govt seeks waiver for penalty on construction jobs worth RM20mil and below

Prof Sundra Rajoo, executive director of the KLCRA, the abritration authority under a new law, the CIPAA, enacted to protect subcontractors against late and non-payment, says he has not received any official word on the Government wanting exemption for contracts worth RM20mil and less.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government wants its construction contracts worth RM20mil and less to be exempted from a law enacted to protect subcontractors against late and non-payment.

According to the Works Ministry, it is seeking an “interim exemption” for such projects at the state and district level where the project management teams “need some time (about two years) to adjust to the requirements of the Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012 (CIPAA)”.
