THE participation process of business awards is beneficial as it encourages a business to pay greater attention to improve various aspect of business management, says Sym World Innovation Sdn Bhd group executive chairman Datuk Tan Kin Lee.
“We participated in Enterprise 50 awards (consistently) in the past four years. We use it as a yardstick to measure our own improvement,” he says.
Sym World was the number one winner of Enterprise 50 award recently.
Tan says winning the award also provides the company with greater public acceptance and recognition.
The award is an annual award programme organised by the SME Corp Malaysia and Deloitte Malaysia.
Integrated marketing communications company Sym World Sdn Bhd (SW), which was started by Tan’s wife Datin Sym Teh in 2002, was created following a merger and the acquisition of an existing media agency,
Backed with 15 years experience in advertising industry, she started SW with the help of two other staff memberss.
“She has grown the company steadily since then, accumulating trust and support from customers and media partners by working diligently and by providing value and reliable service to customers,” he says.
Tan was invited by his wife to help grow the company in 2009. He is a trained civil engineer who had also a few successful business ventures in the field of engineering and information, communication and technology (ICT).
“I was taking my break and doing some passive investment. I wanted to reduce her workload and also to test out my ability in building another business organisation in a different industry, using available resources, people and innovative thinking,” he says.
Step by step
As one who is trained in construction, Tan says it will only last if it is well designed and built on solid foundation.
“Sustainability is one of our objectives. We place equal importance on need for growth and on risk mitigation,” he says.
Consistently, they have moved up from 14th place in their first attempt in 2010, 11th place in 2011, 6th place in 2012 and finally in 2013, to No. 1.
“What really matters to us is how we could better ourselves from time to time. We have participated in SME Corp’s Score (SME Competitiveness Rating for Enhancement programme) in the process,” he says.
The Multimedia Super Corridor-status company had also added another subsidiary to the group, Sym World Digital Sdn Bhd, to focus on Internet-based advertising.
“Globalisation and prevalent use of Internet is making major changes to our lives and businesses around us. Besides challenges brought about by slower economic situation and escalating business cost, prevalent use of internet media has also changed the advertising landscape and has greatly increased its complexity,” he says.
They have also recently acquired a 30% stake in ClickAcademy Asia Sdn Bhd. Working with Econsultancy of UK which is a global leader in digital marketing training, research and consultancy, ClickAcademy offers digital marketing classes in Asia.
Hoping to create synergy by harnessing and developing their expertise in digital and social media marketing, they will continue to explore new opportunities with local as well as international potential partners for synergistic growth, Tan says.
