Sharp Decline In Cameron Highlands Tourism

Rolling hills: Cameron Highlands is surrounded with green and scenic view.

KUALA LUMPUR: The year-end school holiday season should mark the start of tourist bloom for the locals in Malaysia. For a long time, the higher altitude of Cameron Highlands has been a great local favourite for families who want to experience a cool climate holiday. However, according to iBilik, December bookings for the highland short term rental apartments have dropped significantly when compared to the previous years.

One of the factors that may contribute to the decline may be the recent Bertam Valley flood catastrophe. Triggered by continuous rain, the Sultan Abu Bakar dam in Ringlet overflowed into immediate vicinities. The October tragedy caused damages to at least 80 properties and has four reported deaths. The repercussions of the incident are still felt by Cameron Highlands residents, including short term rentals business owners.
