SHAH ALAM: PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd believes that companies should be responsible in how they make their profits.
“Our tagline at PKT is that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is not about how you spend your profits. Instead, it is about how responsible you are in making your profits,” said group chief executive and managing director Datuk Michael Tio.
He added that any CSR programme that was put in place should be a sustainable practice, such as PKT’s Anak Belajar Ibu Bekerja (ABIB) CSR programme.
The programme was initiated to offer job opportunities to mothers living in the villages surrounding PKT’s facilities in Shah Alam. ABIB also provides training to enhance the mothers’ skill sets in the relevant areas.
“It has been successful because we focused on the five villages surrounding PKT. We invited all the mothers in the area to come to work, while their children were at school,” Tio said.
There are currently 60 people under the ABIB programme, he pointed out.
PKT plans to grow the programme to include at least 150 people by next year. “We have already found the formula to reduce our foreign workers, which are casual workers. We would turn it around and use ABIB instead,” he said.
Tio will be speaking at The Star Business Awards (SOBA) Learning Series 2013, which will be held today at the Puteri Pacific Hotel in Johor. The workshop is themed “Winning Strategies for Today’s Companies”.
Tio will be presenting a talk entitled the SOBA Success Story, which will highlight PKT’s transformation from a domestic logistics company to an international logistics firm.
“My talk would be about the story of PKT, as it has become a very inspiring story to visitors,” he said.
Last year, PKT bagged five SOBA awards, including the “Malaysian Business of the Year” award, as well as another gold for “Best Green Initiative” and two silver awards for “Best in CSR” and “Best Employer”.
Tio said receiving the awards was recognition of the hard work and effort put in by the company.
The talk in Johor will also feature speakers from the Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Bhd (EXIM Bank), the Branding Association of Malaysia and Leaderonomics.
