Essential skills still lacking


The general aptitude of Malaysian students in mathematics and science – subjects which are widely recognised as the scientific and technical building blocks of an economy – is not only below the international scale average, but is also on a declining trend.

As Malaysia works towards moving up the value chain, the need for knowledge, innovation and technology becomes more pronounced. Yet, studies have shown that the foundation on which these three elements are built remains weak in the country.

According to the latest Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011, the general aptitude of Malaysian students in mathematics and science subjects which are widely recognised as the scientific and technical building blocks of an economy is not only below the international scale average, but is also on a declining trend.
