WITH the year coming to an end, it's time for us to take stock of our progress in life, career and financial well-being for 2012. Most of us tend to measure our quality of life and wealth by looking at the things we have and services we enjoy.
How about Malaysia as a progressive society? We are definitely building more condominiums, houses, shopping centres and office buildings, driving more cars, enjoying more services and buying more things. Manufacturers are making more products, creating more services, consuming more and more raw materials and resources to meet the growing demand of consumers. As a society that places such a high value on materialism and consumerism, this sounds like good measures of wealth and success. But are there better ways to measure quality of life?
