PETALING JAYA: The Star bagged the silver award under the Media & Entertainment category at the Putra Brand Awards 2012, becoming the only print medium to win in that category.

The other winners under the category were My FM and TV3, which both earned bronze awards while Golden Screen Cinemas also won the silver award.

The gold award under the Media & Entertainment category went to Astro, which also walked away with the Brand of the Year award.

OldTown White Coffee, meanwhile, earned the gold award under Most Promising Brand of the Year while SenQ was named SME Brand of the Year.

The other brands honoured for Most Promising Brand of the Year were Bonia, Firefly Airlines, Ogawa, Pensonic and Vincci.

The Putra Brand Awards 2012, which was held last night and attended by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, is organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) and endorsed by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade).

It is supported by the Branding Association of Malaysia, the Malaysian Advertisers Association and the Media Specialists Association. A total of 87 awards were presented last night.

The awards are based on results from a research methodology developed by the Pulse Group. About 6,000 consumers were surveyed to determine Malaysia's favourite brands in 20 categories, with the most preferred brands for each category being awarded gold, silver, and bronze.

In his opening speech, 4As president Tony Savarimuthu highlighted the importance for companies to have a strong brand presence.

“Brands must have a compelling reason for consumers to choose them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Matrade chief executive officer Dr Wong Lai Sum said the Putra Brand Awards was not an ordinary award show. “It catapults brands into the international marketplace, especially for SMEs (small and medium-scale enterprises),” she said.

The Putra Brand Awards categories were apparel and accessories, automotive, automotive fuel, beverage (alcoholic), beverage (non-alcoholic), communication devices, communication networks, education & learning, finance, foodstuff, household products, IT and office & business equipment, media & entertainment, personal, household and outdoor appliances, personal care, property development, retail, retail (fast food) and transportation, travel and tourism.

Other gold award recipients last night were Nike (apparel & accesories), Toyota (automotive), Petronas (automotive fuel), Carlsberg, Heineken, Tiger (beverage alcoholic), Milo (beverage non alcoholic) and Apple (communication devices).
