HAS anybody ever grown up dreaming of one day becoming the person whom his country's leadership turns to for advice on science and engineering. Sir John Beddington says that was certainly never his ambition, but there it was in January 2008 his appointment as chief scientific adviser to the British government. He insists that there is no overall theme in his career that has brought him to where he is today. Instead, it is more the result of a series of accidents.
