1. Cities such as Singapore, London, Sydney and Melbourne conduct yearly housing census to decide on the number of property units needed but this is not done for our own cities. Instead, we carry out studies every five years, which is inadequate. Why? Albert Lee, Petaling Jaya
The Department of Statistics conducts “The population and housing census” every 10 years (2010). The department also conducts “The household expenditure survey” throughout Malaysia every 5 years. The yearly statistics of houses are based on our database of houses built by licensed developers and data collected by the National Property Information Programme under the Department of Valuation and Property Services, Finance Ministry. This data is adequate for planning purposes. Conducting yearly housing census involves huge expenditure and is not really necessary. My ministry is working on improving the data collection process.
