IS kenaf, a versatile plant with promising potential for industrial uses, ready to replace tobacco cultivation in Malaysia? Will kenaf also be able to raise the meagre income of local tobacco growers and be the curers to higher returns? The Government certainly thinks so.
Early this month, the three-decade-old Malaysia Tobacco Board was officially dissolved and replaced with Malaysia Kenaf and Tobacco Board. This follows the repeal of the National Tobacco Board (Incorporation) Act 1973 which resulted in the implementation of the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board Act 2009.
