Toyota apologises for massive recalls

TOKYO: Toyota took full-page ads in major Japanese newspapers Wednesday to apologise for massive recalls, and began fixing braking glitches for two problem hybrid models, as pressure continued to build on the automaker to come clean on defects.

Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda is scheduled to give an update on the global recalls and quality control efforts later in the day at Tokyo headquarters as the world's biggest automaker struggles to salvage its reputation.
