Contributors to USP fund want to know how the RM5bil is spent

PETALING JAYA: Industry players, who have contributed a total of more than RM5bil to the Universal Service Provision (USP) fund would like to see more transparency on how the fund is managed to achieve its goal of bridging the country’s digital divide.

They would also like the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which manages the USP fund, to consider lowering the base contribution rate of 6% of revenue, considering that the fund is largely under-utilised at present and that the earnings of telecommunications operators have been impacted by the economic slowdown.
