COCOA planting in Malaysia, which has taken a backseat since the early 1990s to make way for mass oil palm cultivation, is experiencing a slow but steady revival at the smallholders’ level.
The alarming drop in local cocoa acreage from 420,000ha in 1992 to a mere 20,000ha currently has triggered an urgent call to restore the shrinking acreage and number of local cocoa estates, located mostly in Perak, Kelantan, Pahang and Sabah.
