New hope in the new year

THE start of every new year brings new hope. Indeed, good news would be most welcome as we badly need some after the brutal economic battering experienced in 2008. During the coming Chinese New Year, many will also refer to astrology or Feng Shui to peek into what 2009 holds for each of our horoscopes!

But how much faith should we put in such forecasts, be it supported by statistics or the stars? A quote from John Kenneth Galbraith, an economist and author of The Great Crash 1929, who obviously did not think much of either: “The function of economic forecasting is to make astrology look respectable”.
