WE always look at CR as one of the things that we have to do all the time. In fact, we have been doing this for many years, especially in the environment sector.
We strive to ensure that we safeguard the environment and the people around the area where we are operating.
We have specific investment allocations for CR initiatives and will always look at new areas (other than the environment) where we can contribute. Going forward, we are looking at other CR initiatives that promote sports, healthcare and education.

FOR us, the element of CR begins with our workers. We feel that it is important to uplift our workers first before looking outside. We want to give them better working conditions and provide scholarships for the children of our employees.
Our focus will be to benefit those from the low income group. This year, we have sponsored two of our employees to do their masters in University Malaya.
We have also embarked on a special CR initiative where we co-sponsored a dialysis centre to benefit dialysis patients. It is a RM1mil project and we hope the centre will be up and ready by middle of next year.
Other efforts going forward include initiatives that will benefit school children. We want to help educate children because they are our future.

WE will continue to promote our CR efforts in healthcare. Our main initiative is the Klinik Waqaf An-Nur, a chain of charity clinics with dialysis centres. We now have nine clinics and dialysis centres in Malaysia. We also have a hospital in Pasir Gudang.
Our next target is to set up more charitable clinics, which we feel will benefit members from the lower income group.
We are going to add RM1mil to RM2mil to our CR initiatives from this year onwards. At the moment, we spend about RM3mil a year on CR.
With the high oil prices pushing up the inflation rate, we feel companies should focus on their CR initiatives to help the lower income group. Companies with businesses that have an impact on the environment should also strive to promote initiatives that minimise this impact.

CORPORATE responsibility (CR) has been our practice for years. As a global company, our culture tells us that CR is a right thing to do. We are sincere in doing this and it is not something we adopted just to be glamourous or famous.
Opus has a very clear way forward. We will continue with our current CR initiatives and introduce new ones next year.
One of the new initiatives we will embark on is to conserve and preserve heritage buildings so that people can understand the history better.
Our CR programme within the company involves all our employees from the top management to even our tea ladies.
Our employees are encouraged to volunteer for the various CR programmes that we organise throughout the year.
Going forward, we will invest more in our CR initiative.
The monetary amount might be small but the efforts that our employees made on the weekends doing community work is priceless.

FOR the future, we will focus on three main areas - nutrition, preservation of water and rural development. We continue to focus on nutrition as it is part of our journey as a nutrition, health and wellness company. Water is a very important resource in the world and we want to make sure that we utilise it correctly.
We have a programme in place to reduce our water consumption by 5% every year. Rural development is another obvious focus. We have been part of Malaysia for 96 years and we would like to continue to work with the community.

I believe CR is at the top of the agenda for many companies not only multinational companies. The StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards is a good opportunity to give more visibility and traction to CR. At Nestle, we always say that CR is in our DNA.
The company was started by a pharmacist who wanted to save babies. For us, walking the talk is most important.
We don’t believe in giving cheques and having photo opportunities. We believe in doing it discreetly and consistently. It is not a question of budget - every employee is practising CR on an ongoing basis almost everyday.

WE will work closely with the Ministry of Health on our next CR project, something that is closely knitted to our core business - to provide facilities management and support services to the healthcare sector. We aim to double our CR allocation to RM1.5mil in support of the Ministry of Health’s effort to maintain and service hospitals within the country.
Faber will help the Government to refurbish old hospital buildings as well as build and maintain the facilities for the adoption of a “green garden” in hospitals. We have donated six ambulances worth some RM750,000 to the healthcare sector. This is our way of giving back to the society.
