SUNGAI PETANI: United States-based WaferGen Biosystems Inc is setting up a RM10mil research and development (R&D) centre under new unit WaferGen Biosystems (M) Sdn Bhd at the Kulim-High Tech Park in Kedah.
This is the biotechnology company's first venture outside its Silicon Valley base.
WaferGen is an emerging leader in the development of the state-of-the-art gene expression, genotyping, cell biology and stem cell research systems for the life science and pharmaceutical industries.
Chairman and chief executive officer Alnoor Shivji said the R&D centre would be ready by April and would require some 100 researchers and scientists, mainly locals.
He said the company would form collaborations with local universities, research institutions and relevant supporting industries for research in biotechnology.
Our technology will allow scientists and researchers to discover bio markers that will help address a number of diseases as well as diagnose diseases, he said.
Ultimately, we believe we can help these individuals in conducting their groundbreaking research better, smarter, faster and cheaper, he told reporters after an agreement signing ceremony recently.
WaferGen Biosystems (M) signed a memorandum of agreement with Kulim Technology Park Corp (KTPC) for lease of office space and with KedahBio Resources Corp Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of KTPC, for use of facilities.
It also signed a memorandum of understanding with Penang-based Pentamaster Corp Bhd for manufacturing and designing the required equipment.
KTPC group CEO Datuk Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin said WaferGen was the first biotech company to team up with KTPC to promote biotechnology activities in Kedah.
