ALOR STAR: Kedah's Crude Oil Storage Complex to be built in the Yan Petroleum Industrial Zone (ZIPY) can store up to 1mil tonnes of crude oil.

The storage facility will be built by Pristine Oil (M) Sdn Bhd using technical expertise by Siemens Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Pristine Oil Chief Operating Officer Kamarulzaman Mohamad said 52 storage tanks would be built on a 101.1ha land.

“We expect to start construction after the land acquisition process is completed in the first quarter of 2008,” he said adding that the complex would start its operations by 2010.

Kamarulzaman said this after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Malaysia as its strategic partner and Datapower Sdn Bhd as the project consultant.

The signing of the MoU for the RM1.8bil project was witnessed by Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid.

Kamarulzaman said Siemens’ Malaysia’s scope was to provide engineering support, automation, tank farm management system, water and waste system and gas turbines and generators.

He said Siemens Malaysia would also provide a loading and unloading facility using a single buoy mooring about 15 nautical miles from the shore.

“We believe the technology provided by Siemens Malaysia would reduce the environmental impact to the surrounding area,” he said.

Siemens Malaysia vice president Keiren Lake said the company would use their experiences in Europe and Saudi Arabia to help Kedah in turning ZIPY as a new hub for crude oil in South East Asia.
