IPOH: The Greentown commercial area here is gearing towards becoming Perak’s second Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) hub within a year.
State Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology Committee chairman Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the Greentown Square and Greentown Suria centres here were currently preparing to qualify for the status from the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC).
“In fact, I think it will become one of the most sophisticated centres in Malaysia,” he said.
The first MSC hub in Perak was Bandar Meru Raya, located in Jelapang, near here.
“We have to first make sure the designated areas are fully equipped with the necessary facilities to meet MSC requirements,” Dr Zambry told reporters after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the application of the status here.
The requirements, he added, were a part of the 10 bills of guarantee as stipulated by the Government.
“They include making sure that the areas have enough facilities like telephone lines, water and electricity supply, good infrastructure, and a location that is accessible to basic amenities in the city like hospitals and so on,” said Dr Zambry.
Additionally, he said the proposed areas must be equipped with wireless broadband technology, which Greentown already has.
He said the State Development Corporation, Ipoh City Council, KPerak Inc and other relevant companies had formed a committee to start the ball rolling.
He also said that the application for Perak’s second MSC hub was just the beginning of future applications.
“It is a part of our efforts to make sure that Perak has at least 70% Internet coverage in the years ahead,” he said.
However, he stressed that Perak was not out to compete with other states or to show off its technological advancements but was instead gearing towards collaborating with others and sharing its expertise.
