PETALING JAYA: Advertising expenditure (adex) in Malaysia grew 8.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2007 compared with the previous corresponding period.

Cinema adex increased 36.4% for the quarter, radio 13.2%, point-of-sale 30.5%, and television 6.8%.

The top three categories in advertising spending for the period were mobile line services, government institutions and real estate.

ZenithOptimedia Malaysia chief executive Gerald Miranda said global growth, resilient domestic demand and private investments were providing a strong “tailwind” for the advertising industry.

“Tourism-related advertising and promotional activities are also expecting a boost from Visit Malaysia 2007,” he said in a statement.

ZenithOptimedia also predicted the global adex to grow fractionally above its trend rate in 2007 after a stronger-than-average 2006, and over the last 10 years, adex had grown at an average rate of 5% annually.

The agency said adex in Asia Pacific would be accelerating in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when growth should reach 7.7%. Adex growth for 2006 was 6.2%.

It was also predicted that Internet advertising spending would grow 28.2%
