LONDON: European equities closed quietly mixed Wednesday, though upbeat German confidence data put a floor under trading and companies in defensive sectors advanced.

The German DAX 30 ended little changed, up 0.04 percent at 5,447, the French CAC 40 fell 0.3 percent at 4,756 and the U.K. FTSE 100, after an extended holiday break, advanced 0.5 percent at 5,622, reaching a new four-year high during the day.
