ROME: Former EU competition commissioner Mario Monti, a top contender to take over the embattled Bank of Italy, stepped out of the running Saturday saying he had other plans.
Monti wrote a letter to Premier Silvio Berlusconi saying he was honored to have been mentioned as a possible successor to Antonio Fazio, who resigned this week amid a growing banking scandal. But he said he didn't want to be a candidate for the job.
