PC shipments rise 17% to 52 million in third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO: Shipments of personal computers rose a robust 17% in the third quarter, helped by strong sales of notebook PCs and lower prices and as Apple Computer Inc posted the highest growth rate of the top five PC firms in the United States, two research firms said on Monday. 

Market research firms IDC and Gartner said that worldwide shipments of PCs rose more than 17% to more than 52 million in the third quarter. IDC's and Gartner's figures differ somewhat due to different methodologies.
