NEW YORK (AP) - Pharmaceutical companies are expected to post modest earnings gains for the second quarter, aided by favorable foreign exchange rates and rising prescriptions of key drugs.
Yet the industry continued to struggle with problems that have hampered profits in recent quarters, including a lack of new potential blockbuster drugs, intensifying competition from generic-drug makers, increasing regulatory scrutiny and high-profile product withdrawals.
