SYDNEY: Australian company profits unexpectedly declined in the first quarter, as slowing demand curbed earnings at retailers and builders.
Gross operating profits fell by 1.7% following a revised 0.4% increase in the fourth quarter, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said yesterday. The report also showed inventories held by businesses rose 2%.
