THE Malaysian Government is expected to announce a new car industry policy next month that officials say will dismantle tariffs and other barriers that have long allowed national car maker, Proton Holdings Bhd, to dominate its auto market.
But people familiar with talks between the Malaysian Government and auto industry officials say the new policy isn’t likely to completely open the market and won’t match the spirit of the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta). Under that agreement, Malaysia has committed to opening its market.
