Glove makers: Maintain special tariff for natural gas

THE Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MRGMA) has urged the Government to maintain the special tariff for natural gas beyond December 2005.

This will provide great relief to the manufacturing industry that is heavily dependent on natural gas as an energy source.

In its memorandum for the Miti annual dialogue, MRGMA said the production of rubber/ latex gloves required energy in its heating process (to dry wet gloves).

It said natural gas was the major source of energy in the glove industry and constituted about 10% of the production cost.

MRGMA said the current special tariff for natural gas at about RM12 per MMBTU (million metric British thermal unit) since March 2003 had been a welcome incentive to manufacturers, compared with the old tariff of up to RM20-RM22 per MMBTU. – Bernama
