NEW YORK: US stocks advanced on Friday as a jump in September retail sales boosted investor confidence in the economy, but oil prices at a fresh record of US$55 a barrel kept gains in check.
The bigger-than-expected gain in September retail sales lifted shares of retailers, such as Dow and S&P 500 component Wal-Mart Stores Inc, which gained nearly 1%.
