The Government’s move to increase petrol and diesel prices by five sen a litre from today is to rationalise the current fuel subsidies and to curb the budget deficit, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Mustapha Mohamed said.
“If we do nothing, the situation will become untenable. We just cannot continue with the current level of subsidies because it would affect our plan to reduce the budget deficit,” he told senior journalists in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
