SINGAPORE: Asia-Pacific airlines have begun raising fuel surcharges as crude oil prices soar towards the US$50-a-barrel level, threatening the carriers’ profits just as they are rebounding from last year’s Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) crisis.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its regional wing SilkAir announced on Thursday they would increase fuel surcharges on all air tickets, except for those to Malaysia, to between US$7-US$12 from the current US$5 from September.
