Air New Zealand tie-up to help stave off stiff competition

AUCKLAND: Air New Zealand sought an alliance with Australia's Qantas Airways Ltd to help fight off the threat posed by global carrier Emirates and new discount airline Pacific Blue, lawyer and former Air NZ chairman Jim Farmer told the High Court here yesterday. 

Qantas Airways wants to buy up to 22.5% of Air NZ for NZ$550mil, with both carriers agreeing to co-operate on flights across the Tasman Sea and within New Zealand.
